Description
DRILL AND BLAST ENGINEER
African Barrick Gold’s Bulyanhulu Gold Mine in Tanzania seeks to employ an experienced Drill and Blast Engineer. This role reports to the Mining Engineer Section Leader and the role holder is accountable to ensure that the shift production schedule is followed by supervising and controlling the drill and blast crew. The incumbent must ensure that statutory requirements and company safety policies for safe and efficient blasting are being followed.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Ensuring that all aspects of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, mines regulations and Company safety policies are being strictly complied with on a daily basis
• Inspecting all drilling work places underground with regard to their safe working condition on a daily basis
• Ensuring that daily and monthly toolbox talks are completed
• Maintaining a daily diary record of drill issues, including frequent assessment of crew member competency
• Ensuring that the drill production schedule in line with the production sheet is being followed on a daily basis
• Ensuring that the blasting is in line with the schedule on a daily basis
• Monitoring all factors affecting drill efficiency and assisting to effectively coordinate drill maintenance
• Ensuring that all drill and blast design requirements are being adhered to on a daily basis
• Organising blast sentries and coordinating blasting contractor for guarding and blasting procedures
• Ensuring that clear direction is given at shift handover
• Ensuring that the Mining Operations Section Leader, or his/her delegate, are informed of any significant event or need for change to drilling requirements
• Liaising with contractors to resolve any production problems on a daily basis
• Attending production meetings as required and liaising with the Drill & Blast team on technical and practical issues
• Liaising with Survey for pattern layout requirements and with Mining Supervisors for pattern clean up, safety windrows and layout
• Maintaining records of the drill and blast activities on a daily basis
• Reporting accidents/incidents immediately to Mining Section Leader and assisting in the preparation of written accident investigation reports
• Ensuring compliance with environmental management practices that minimise the impact of the operation on the environment and reporting any variances or departures
• Ensuring compliance with all contractual, statutory and regulatory requirements
• Ensure that the requirements of the Project Management Plans are adhered to and implemented
• Observing all requirements of the quality system and reporting any non-conformance to the Mining Section Leader
• Ensuring ongoing effective people management of the section by setting clear performance objectives, providing regular feedback and development through training of staff
• Ensuring that any improvement opportunity is communicated to the Mining Operation Section Leader for review.
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Education Requirements:
• Shot Firer’s Ticket
• Full Driving Licence
• Current First Aid Certificate
Experience Requirements:
• Extensive hands on experience with drilling in a large-scale underground environment
• Competent in pattern design, drill planning and scheduling
• Knowledge of mine site safety issues
• Knowledge of large earth moving equipment operation
• Basic survey skills
Skills Requirements:
• Attention to detail and ability to deal with numbers
• Solid people management skills & clear verbal communication
• Presentation skills
• Ability to effectively manage subcontractors
• Ability to schedule multiple activities
• Ability to assess drill and blast conditions effectively and constructively
• Ability to complete written reports
